Pel watched Sliet uncertainly, worried the other wasn't taking this seriously enough. She wanted to protect her friend, but she wasn't naive enough to think she could keep him from getting hurt in a dangerous situation.
She said nothing, looking down for a minute. "I'll try- but if he gets hurt again I don't want to be helpless." She replied desperately. "Isn't there something I can learn? What about how you numbed him?" The girl asked, trying not to sound demanding. She didn't want to bother Sliet, she was just scared.

Raven wasn't sure of what to say. He felt both warm and awful about how much she wanted to keep him safe. He felt the same way, but it wasn't fair for her to feel like she was responsible for his life and well being. He dragged himself here to find her and be with her, not to make her life more stressful.

(Going back)

Kathrine fallowed along after Terra. Normally she stayed back behind the two of them when they spoke on the second bike, but Ruth was on her own this time; she'd been quiet lately, and for some reason, she'd chosen to distance herself lately. Maybe she was still upset over Terra having hauled her away from her lover boy's farm for this mission.
Kathrine didn't exactly mind, enjoying the chance to ride with Terra. She leaned forward a little so the other could hear her through the wind.
"Um, Terra," She started absently. "Maybe we should debrief again, I-"

"Not now Kat, I need to concentrate." She replied quickly, shifting the gears on the motor and speeding up. The blond had certainly been talkative lately, and she knew kathrine had the plan memorized and thought out, like she always did. Why was she being so silly?

Kathrine went quiet. "Alright, sorry." In truth, she just wanted to be sure she was still with the other during the break in. Terra had a habit of changing things up at the last minute, and she didn't want to be alone again standing guard while Ruth ran around with Terra and did all the exciting things.
Ruth was their back up this time, she didn't know why, maybe Terra was testing her. She normally kept Kathrine out danger rather than trusting her at her side.
All she knew about the mission was that the federation had captured another like them. She wasn't sure if it was one of the others they'd known, some run away, but no matter what, if the federation got their hands on the tech it could be a catastrophe in the future.

When they had parked the bikes and stealthily found their way into the facility, Ruth parted with them to set up munitions and find a place to give them cover from, watching for any unwelcome company. It wouldn't be long.
Kathrine trailed after Terra quickly as alarms went off.
"Cover me, I'll be right back-" She ordered, and the blonde nodded, falling back.

Terra raced into the central containment area, bashing her way into the safety chambers and through the decontamination unit.
She paused for a moment at what she found. A little girl. For a second, she was confused. Had this been a mistake?
The fairweather project hadn't used children. The closest thing they had to a child was Kathrine when she got put on lookout duty.
Her mind raced as she approached the little one. 'Hello... My name is Terra.. we don't have much time, come with me, okay, we'll get you out of here." She said softly, crouching a little to be less intimidating and reaching out her hand. If this little one was one of them, then startling her might be a very bad choice.

Sliet sat curled up against the far wall of her room with her hands pressed firmly against her ears in an attempt to block out the sound of the alarms when the door practically blew up. She looked up in surprise and fear at the strange person that... actually looked like amperson for once instead of the weird lumpy people with the masks. No, this one was a real person, and she seemed just as confused to see Sliet as Sliet was to see her. She watched the other carefully with reddened gold eyes that were still wet with tears. Her tired mind seemed to short circuit when the strange woman spoke to her. Out? Really? No more of the mean and scary people that did such strange things? She reached out a shaking hand to take Terra's, rather uncertainly, pushing herself to her feet and shaking slightly with fear and exhaustion.

Terra took the poor girl's hand and scooped her effortlessly into her arms, keeping her head against her shoulder to give her some shelter from the chaos they were about to run into.
She took off out through the chamber, rushing through soldiers who were on their way in. She touched the metal of the chamber and sent electrical shock through the walls, burning them where they stood and trying to ignore the screams.
She kept running, back out to where Kathrine was shooting, and shouted for the other to fallow. She held the child close with one arm and drew her weapon with the other, turning to fire as her and Kathrine raced around the corner.

"Here, take her." The older woman said quickly, having to pull the little girl off of her as she passed her to Kathrine.
"She's a little kid?" The blonde asked, looking up in confusion as she held the other close, trying to soothe her, but she didn't expect an answer from the child or her partner.
Terra shouted in rising fear into her earpiece, taking aim at the soldiers in the hall and firing in between words to keep them back.
"Ruth! We need you, now! We're pinned!" She shouted, but there was only static rustling in her ear. "Ruth, dammit, answer me, we need help! RUTH!" Her words were torn from her mouth as a shell hit her in the shoulder. She ducked back for a second, breathing quickly, her eyes wild as she looked for some way out of this. After a moment she reloaded her gun, not meeting Kathrine's eyes.
"Take the girl and get out."
"Terra?" Kathrine watched her with eyes wide in fear.
"I said get out!" She snapped, locking eyes with her friend and starting to get up.
Kathrine searched the other's face before catching her arm. "Terra, I'm not leaving you here! We can fight them! Terra!" She tugged on the other, trying to get her to stop.
The woman turned, catching Kathrine's hand and looking at the other.
"Kat, you told me you wanted to see Flora more than anything. You're never going to get that chance unless you listen to me and get out." She hissed.
"I wanted to see it with you!" Kathrine pleaded, holding onto the other desperately.
Terra hesitated before hugging the other tightly for a few seconds, shutting her eyes and taking a shaking breath.
"You'll have to see it for both of us. Go." She said softly, pulling away and taking off, tearing her hand away from Kathrine.
"Terra!" Kathrine screamed after her in anguish, standing up with the child still in her arms and failing to hold onto her friend as tears filled her eyes.
She couldn't run for a moment, frozen in place, in shock as she watched Terra slip away.

When she finally found herself outside, running without thinking, still clutching the little girl tightly, she launched herself onto the bike and started it, taking off as gunshots tore through the air around her. She didn't look for Ruth, for anything except escape.
After what felt like hours, the fields and wreckage had gone silent. The sky in soft grey waves above them and the ground  stretched out, solid and vast beneath their feet. She stopped the bike and stumbled off of it, unable to go any farther, and resting the girl on her feet, made it a few more steps before crumpling to her knees and sobbing.

Sliet made a distressed noise as she was detached from Terra, but was soon clinging onto Katherine just as tightly. She buried her face in the others shoulder, trying to block out everything that was happening around her, anf she succeeded for the most part, not comihg to her senses until Katherine set her down. She looked around her in shock, unable to register anything that had just happened. At some point it clicked that Katherine was crying, and she small girl stumbled over to her awkwardly. She wondered what to do for a moment before settling on what her mother had always done to calm her down, and started to rub her hand up and down between the others shoulder blades gently, unable to think of any other way to help.

Kathrine wasn't sure what to do, to think, she couldn't even completely grasp that Terra was gone. She clutched her short hair tightly in fists as her body was wracked with each sobbing cry.
What would she tell Otifer? How would she protect the little one on her own? Where the hell was Ruth? She looked up as she felt a small hand on her back, rubbing the tears from her red eyes and watching the other in confusion as she realized the child was trying to comfort her.
She felt a sudden pang of guilt; as overwhelmed and horrible as she felt, the little girl was probably terrified and exhausted as well. This wasn't the time to grieve. She took a couple hiccuping breathes before turning to face the other. "I'm sorry- I just... I don't know what to do." She said softly, trying to think of what the next step would be.
"Are you hungry?" She asked, her voice still shaky as she pulled out a pack of dried fruit bits, pulling it open and holding out to the child.

Sliet watched the other with an odd expression. Of course she knew what to do. She was a grown up, and knowing what to do was a part of being a grown up. She grew far more atentive whennthenother asked if she was hungry though. She most certainly was. She had no idea how long it had been since she'd eaten, but it had been a while. She looked at the dried fruit skeptically, taking a handful and sniffing it before shoving most of it into her mouth at once. The small girl was surprised to quite enjoy the taste, repeating the process two or three more times before yawning, extremely tired now that she had something in her stomach.

Kathrine watched the child eat quietly, regaining her composure and letting the other finish. The little one looked tired and worn out, and for as long as it took them to reach exhaustion, she wondered with concern what they had been doing to her. She could tell the child was one of them; the way she could feel her system react when they made contact was proof enough that the girl had the nanotechnology running through her. It didn't make any sense. She understood about the aging; the nanotech regenerated them so quickly that they didn't wear out as fast- an unseen side effect of having the tech. Otifer had said it was a flaw, but a fixable one; the tech would just have to have  new program installed in it to enable normal deterioration. She'd told him to leave it alone. But then what about this little girl? Had the nanotech been passed on through birth? Or had she been some by product of the testing? Either way, she was too little to answer these questions.

When the other finished the food and yawned, Kathrine put the empty pack into her pocket and reached out to the girl to pick her up. There was a few days travel between now and the station, and she had to get back to Otifer.
Ruth's bike had been gone, so she had gotten away, she just wasn't sure where the other was now.

The small girl let Katherine pick her up without protest, holding onto the other more gently this time. She snuggled up to the other once she was settled, comforted by the contact she'd been without for so long. She looked up at Katherine sleepily, trying to figure out who this person was and why they felt kind of like her mom did.

Kathrine held the girl carefully in her arms, feeling a surprising warmth when the little one looked up at her, and stroked her hair gently. "It'll be alright. We're going to go to a safe place, no one is going to hurt you there, I promise." She said softly, worried that the child might be afraid; after going through so much and then that fight, it was a lot to handle.
She tried not to think about what had happened or what it would mean, she just had to get herself and the kid to the station.

She climbed onto the bike and kept the girl against her lap, taking off. She headed straight, leaving the path and driving through the endless, pale fields.
Far off was the skyline of an empty city, dark and brown against the grey sky. It's peaks crumbled off, and dull light glinted off the remaining fragments of windows of the once-soaring sky scrapers.
It was an tainted area; deadly radiation and nuclear waste had soaked the ground, and would for decades to come. It would keep the federation off of their tails, and it had little effect on the nanotech, which would soon filter out the toxins. She didn't stop between the devastated buildings, or slow to take in the shattered memory of the world long gone. She pushed silently on as night fell, and when they rode past the rusted city limits sign and back out onto the cracked, stretching highway, she heaved a breath of relief.

About an hour after, the bike had lost fuel at a rapid pace and gave out, loosing power. Alarmed, Kathrine stopped it and got off, setting Sliet down gently and trying to figure out what was wrong. She could hardly tell in the empty light, let alone see Sliet, but worked it out to something having damaged the fuel tank.
Sighing and running a hand through her hair, she reached out to Sliet and passed the little one a flash light, turning it on. "Here, hold this for a sec, I'll just be a minute, stay with me kid, alright?" She whispered, before grasping the bike and hauling it away from the road, pulling it into a wide ditch where it tumbled into the plants, concealing it's self.
She walked back to Sliet and held out her hand. "We should keep walking, do you want a piggy-back?" She asked, guessing the kid was still tired.

Sliets eyes closed after the others assurance, and she was almost completely asleep by the time they reached the motorcycle. The small girl didn't stir again until Katherine set her down, confused as to why they had stopped.
She rubbed her eyes and tried to watch Katherine in the darkness, more annoyed and grumpy when the other first passed her the flashlight, but that quickly changed when she turned it on. Her eyes went wide with surprise and excitement at the beam of light. She didn't even hear the rest of what the other said, moving the piece in her hand around and watching the light follow it happily. She grinned and giggled, trying to see if she could move it fast enough that the light couldn't follow, effectively flailing it around in every direction. Katherine got her atention back with the mention of a piggy-back ride, the little girl reaching up towards the other and muttering a few hushed "please"'s. She loved piggy-backs. They made her feel tall.

Kathrine looked at the other in confusion as she swung the flashlight around. She was far to exhausted to get annoyed, and was glad that the other was enjoying herself with the flashlight. For the first time that day she smiled a little when the other ran over for a piggy back and put her little arms up. Kathrine bent down and picked her up, swinging her over her shoulders. "Hup- there you go." She told the other, handing her the flashlight again. "You can shine it so we can see, alright? But if we see someone else, I want you to turn it off so they don't see us. Like hide and seek." She added, hoping the other would believe it. She didn't want to scare the little girl, but they couldn't afford to end up running into soldiers or travelers who might try to harass or rob them.

After they had walked a long ways, Kathrine tiredly picked the other up off of  her shoulders and carried her against her. "Time to sleep." She announced softly, walking up until they came to a little, shallow ridge with a stream. The hill  would hide them from the road way a few metres behind and above them, and the tall grass was soft enough to lay down in for a while. She sat down with Sliet in her lap. "Okay, we'll sleep here and go in the morning; if you have to pee, if you hear or see something, if you get scared, or anything, I want you to wake me up, okay? I don't mind, just no running off. You can keep the flashlight, too." She added on, patting the girl on the head. Maybe the other was scared of the dark.
She laid down next to the other, an arm under her head. "Oh, I almost forgot, do you have a name? Mine's Kat." She said softly.

Sliet muttered an okay quietly at her instructions, a little worried at the thought of hide and seek. She didn't like hiding much, but she managed to keep her mind busy wondering how someone managed to get the sun into the little thing in her hand. Was that where it went at night?
The small girl didn't argue when she was told it was sleep time, still tired even after sleeping earlier. She nodded when she was told what to do if there was any trouble, and quite happy about being able to keep her sun stick thingie. She laid down next to the other, hugging the flashlight and curling up comfortably against Katherine. The little one blinked up at Katherine with wide golden eyes in mild confusion. Of course she had a name. Everyone and everything had a name didn't it? "Sliet." She said simply. She had another name too. Mommy had said it was important because it had come from daddy, but it didn't seem important here.

Post by Deathcap Mon Aug 03, 2015 11:18 pm

Kathrine nodded tiredly, a little surprised when the other cuddled against her. She rested her jacket around the little girl and held her close trying to give her some comfort. Kathrine her eyes flutter shut as she waited for Sliet to fall asleep.
She listened to the silence of night for a long time, remember when it used to be full of the chirping of frogs and crickets. She couldn't sleep at first, every time she tired she thought of Terra, the frightening image of her hand slipping away as she took off. She wondered where Ruth had gone, what she would do, what she would say to Otifer. The shock was too much, and she wasn't sure that she could cry or morn, or even believe the other was gone at the moment.
Sleep eventually took her in her exhaustion, and she drifted off to sleep with the child nestled safely in her arms.

In the morning, she gently woke the other up and moved on, letting the little girl ride on her shoulders again so they could move more quickly. A few times she noticed airships soar overhead and hid quietly until the danger had passed.
After a number of hours, they left the machines behind and headed over the vast fields.
She didn't grow tired, though she imagined the little girl was likely getting hungry, but at least she was well behaved.

Eventually they came upon another ruined city, though this one was not irradiated. When they did, she tested her radio, switching to a secure channel.
The voice of an old man responded, he sounded fraught with worry and spoke quickly. "Terra, oh god Terra, where have you been? I feared the worst-"
Kathrine cut him off mid sentence, her voice direct and cold. "It's Kathrine, Otifer, we secured the captive."
"Kathrine? Where is Terra?"
"We ran into trouble. Terra's gone."
There was silence on the line for a moment as Kathrine walked.
"What about Ruth?"
"She left us. Took off during the break in."
The man on the radio muttered something, quiet for a long while. "Are you hurt, Kathrine?"
"I'm fine."
"What about the captive, they're with you?"
"I think she's alright. Tired. It's a little girl."
"What do you mean?"
"A child. We're in the ruins now, I'll be there in a hour and explain things."
"I... I see." The voice replied, then cut off.
Kathrine picked up the pace before heading down an empty stretch of road. Eventually, there came a stretch of domes and ruined buildings of what seemed to be an airstrip, parts of it miles away and poking up in the distance like dark lumps.
She approached a massive, scarred building and pushed open a large fire door. Inside it was unlit except for the light filtering through holes in the architecture. "Almost there." She told Sliet softly, heading down several halls and finally coming to another large set of doors. She removed her glove and placed her hand against a panel that shimmered blue and dinged at her touch before typing in a very long pass code and standing back as the doors slid open. A broken, unclear voice came through as they opened. "Welcome to the central FairWeather- st-st-st-ation." It chimed pleasantly. Inside, there was better lighting, and cleaner walls. Kathrine headed through a couple more halls before coming to a room set up like a staff-room kitchen. It was in poor condition, but was warm with pictures, the smell of food and a clean appearance.
A man approached them, looking at Sliet in surprise, then at Kathrine. He was using a cane and looked weathered and tired.
"What happened to you, what's going on?" He asked quietly.
Kathrine shook her head. "We aren't in danger now. After. I want to find the little one something to eat and somewhere to sleep." She set the little girl down. "Sliet, this is Otifer." She told the girl.

Sliet stayed quiet for most of the journey. She was boredfor most of it too, but she observed the landscape curiously in silence. When she'd traveled with her family before, she'd never gone this long without seeing someone else, there were usually travelers on the road at some point. She watched in surprise as the man's voice came outnof the little box thing. How did he get in there? How ,any other big things did Katherine have that fit into little tiny things? Once they had finished talking, she went back to looking at the landscape, gazing in awe as they aproached the large building, amazed at how many great places there were to run out here. She held onto Katherine tighter as they entered the huge building, a little freaked out to be back indoors, and this place looked pretty creepy. She watched the doors open in awe, gasping at the voice. Where had that one come from? She watched the old man uncertainly as he approached, meeting his gaze curiously. Why were so many people surprised to see her lately? The little girl ducked behind Katherines legs as she was set down, peeking around at the strange man shyly. Katherine seemed to be okay with him, but Sliet didn't know for sure.

Otifer looked down at the small girl and stared at her a little. "Hello there..." This was most curious; how had she come about? "Where are you from dear?" He started, but Kathrine started to guide her away. "I said I want to get her some rest first. I'll talk to you after that." Kathrine snapped, at the end of her rope at this point. She gently led Sliet out into a hall and opened the door to a bedroom. It had a beige cot with military grade warm blankets left messy. Next to this was a lamp on a metal table and an ammo trunk full of clothes and belongings. "Here you go. I'll go get you some supper. You can nap if you want, or go through my stuff. There's cooler stuff than the flashlight in there." Kathrine smiled at her before exiting, leaving the door open a bit so the girl could leave if she needed to.
She dug out a ration from the kitchen and poured a corn chowder into a bowl before heating it up as Otifer watched her quietly, then taking it and a clean ration of water back to the child and setting it on the nightstand. "How's that, are you doing okay?" She asked softly, sitting on the bed.

Sliet opened her mouth to answer the man before Katherine started to push her away. She scanned the new room curiously, eying the trunk most of all. Cooler things than the flashlight? No way. She went over to the teunk excitedly, interested in what could possibly be cooler than the flashlight. It took her couple of minutes of sifting through things before she realized Katherine was gone, and another moment after that for the panic to set in. Where did she go? How long until she came back? She was coming back right? She climbed over and onto the bed, wrapping one of the blankets around herself tightly in an attempt to calm herself down. She didn't want to be alone again. She looked up in relief when the other returned, hugging her tightly when she sat down.

The blonde put her arm around the other carefully, rubbing her shoulders to comfort her. "What's the matter, Sliet?" She asked gently.

She was confused why shed been left alone the first time, and about why after staying with her this long, Katherine would leave now, and she was scared of it all happening again, even if this room was better than the last one.

Kathrine looked at her in confusion, feeling sorry for the girl. "Sliet, I only went to get you food, it's alright, I'm not going to go anywhere right now, okay? I just have to talk to Otifer about some things, but we're right down the hall if you need anything." She told the dark haired girl, holding her closer. After a moment, she got up. "One second, okay?" She went over the trunk and dug down through to a shoe box on the bottom, opening it up. Inside were photos of her family, the original team of volunteers and scientists, her old house, she had dried flowers from before the war, and a few other special things she'd held onto. She took out a small stuffed brown horse, beaten up and patched from childhood play. She held it out to Sliet, sitting back down. "Here. My mom gave me this when I was little like you. I used to take it everywhere and hug it when I felt scared, because she's a very special horse, and she'll keep you safe no matter what." Kathrine told her seriously.

Sliet reached out for the horse with one hand and rubbed her eyes with the other, sniffling. "Really? " she asked the blonde shakily, holding the stuffed horse close.

Kathrine nodded. "Yup. I'm still around, aren't I? If you feel upset or alone you can just hold onto her." Kathrine said, holding onto the girl for a little while longer to calm her down. "Are you okay if I go out there to talk to Otifer for a little while? You eat your supper and explore a little bit, and I'll be back soon after, okay?" She asked the other softly.

Sliet thought about her answer for what feltmlike a long time before nodding and muttering a quiet 'okay'. Even if she didn't want to be alone, magic horse or no, if Kat was coming back she'd be okay... right?

Kathrine nodded and got up, heading out into the hall to talk to Otifer. She explained everything that she knew to him. He seemed to be just as exhausted as she was when she finished, but he wanted to ask the little one all sorts of questions. Remembering her fearful state and what she had likely been through, she pleaded with him to wait, and after managing to force some food down, she walked into Terra's room.
She stayed there for a little while, looking at the pictures on the walls, and ended up laying in the other's spot on the bed, clutching the other's pillow and not moving for a while. She'd spent more nights in this room than her own these last couple months, but it felt so empty and cold without Terra there.
She hoped for a second that when she opened her eyes, the other would be lying next to her, warm and alive, that this had all been some nightmare.
She clutched the pillow tighter and opened her eyes to nothing but the empty room.

Eventually, she managed to get up and returned to her own room where she had left Sliet, going over to the other. "Ready to sleep kiddo?" She asked the other softly.

Ojce Katherine had left, Sliet wandered over to the chest again, still interested as to its contents. By the time the other returned she had about half of it spread out on the floor carefully, having taken her time to do it more or less neatly, so it was about as clean as a mess could be. She jumped to her feet when the other returned, navigating her way around the objects on the floor, still holding onto the horse, to get to the other. She wasn't exactly ever ready for sleep, but she supposed she was as ready as she would ever be.
