Gena frowned. "Spes, what did you sign up for?" She asked gently, taking another look at Spes's file. "Maybe you came to the wrong place." She added, but the file said otherwise. Maybe there'd been a mistake, maybe another Gena, another Spes?

Spes seemed to grow distressed at that notion. "Intelligence. You know, research and the like. " she explained herself hasitly.

"Spes... "Intelligence" is... not research. It's working as a professional informant and special operative, like, well, doing the dirty work for the government, eliminated criminals and... others." She explained with concern, dropping her cheerful facade for once. "You're looking for research and documentation or something of the same, hmm. Why don't I walk you down to the employment directory and I'll help you get this mess sorted out?" She suggested.

Spes blinked at the woman, clearly flustered and distressed by her mistake. Yes, that would be nice. Thank you." She said quickly, getting up out of the chair, clearly in quite the hurry to get out of her current predicament.

"It's alright, we'll get it sorted out, you just made a mistake. Keep this quiet, though, if you don't mind. Its best if you forget about all this after we get you switched. I've got a friend who should be able to help." She told the girl gently, standing up and pulling her coat on, patting the other's shoulders as she led her out of the office and shut the door behind them.

"What do you mean?"
"There's no transfers. Between you and me, research is full of boys trying to get out of military service, there's no room. She can put in an application, but to cut to the chase; it won't go through." Murmured the puffy-haired woman behind the desk of the tiny, low ceilinged office.
Gena leaned forward over the desk, the flowery composure she'd worn in the streets was giving way to a much steadier, intimidating manner as she grew more frustrated with the employment officer. "Look at her, she's not fit to do agent work! She's like a baby deer.  She tripped over her own feet on the way over." Gena protested, not wanting to hurt the girl's feelings, but determined to get her out of this line of work.
"Baby deer's good, good with men, no one'll look at her twice." The woman mumbled again, looking over her papers rather than at Gena. "Train her well and the tripping with stop."
"Please, listen, you get her transferred to research, some obscure thing even, I'll make it worth your while."
"I don't take bribes, agent."
"How about a threat." Gena whispered, leaning forward and putting her hands daintily on the table, covering the woman's work. She looked up this time, thoroughly unimpressed.
"No. G."
"Please Barb.  She's a kid."
"So were you, and you're command's favorite little killer. Sometimes we have to take shit assignments. Deal with it G, I do it every day."
"Can you at least put the form through?" Gena groaned.
"No promises." Barb glared joylessly, her eyebrows furrowed grey straw above her glassy eyes. "Now get out of my office."

When they stood in the snow outside the office, Gena had regained her light step and smiling face, but looked worried as she glanced at the other, uncertain what to say or how to help.

Spes watched silently, hoping that this mess would be over and done with soon, but was sorely disappointed as they left the facility. She stared at Gena somewhat intimidated by how quickly she managed to change her apparent mood, still frightened from before. "i'm stuck with you aren't I?" she said softly, already knowing the answer but hoping she was wrong.

Gena walked along with the other, replying and keeping her voice quiet. "For now, yes. I'll keep at trying to find you another position if you're set on it, but you'll have to complete training up until that point; we'll try to make the best of it." She assured.

"Thank you" said spes, though she clearly looked far from reassured. What if she was stuck here. She didn't want anything to do with the danger. She wanted to help people and find solutions for the food shortages. Not this.

On their way home from the dinner party, Josephe walked a little ways from Kait. They'd spent two years together, but he felt like he barely knew her. Still, he felt a slight comfort around the other. They rarely spoke to interacted, but Kait was calm, and quiet, and familiar. He didn't love her, he wasn't sure he ever could, but she felt a little like a companion, if only out of their shared fate together. And still, he didn't want to leave her. Some part of him clung to the warmth he'd felt when they'd held the little one together, however brief it had been, and he'd been there through the second loss, and felt defeated, but as much as they should both be reassigned partners at this point, he'd chosen to stick with her. Maybe it was the familiarity, but some part didn't care if they ever had a child, he just wanted to be beside Kait. The work, the parties, the everyday was boring and numb, it had been for a long time, but Kait was warmth and light. He'd hoped the dinner would have cheered her up, with the foods and pretty clothes; hell, that had been all that mattered to Lina; the material and beautiful, but, looking at Kait's face, she didn't seem any more interested than he had felt in the room stuffy with apathy and gossip. Hesitant, he pulled a napkin from his inner coat pocket and unfolded it neatly to reveal a cluster of cookies. "I... Found something good at least, at the party." He tried softly, holding them out to offer one to her, not sure how she would react, but longing to see the warmth on her face that hadn't been there since the little one.

Kait shuffled along next to Josephe in silence, keeping her head down and eyes on the sidewalk until the other spoke. She looked up at him then to the cookies with a barely there smile, quickly returning back to her somber state. "Where did you find those?"

Josephe hesitated to reply, watching her weak smile with pity. "Out of a cupboard." He admitted bluntly, not too worried about getting chastised for something like that; half the party goers had been too wine drunk to think twice about anything. It had been difficult, but he'd focused on other things and stayed away from the drinks himself. "Would you like them?" He offered softly, holding the napkin out to her.

Josephe nodded, slipping them back into his pocket and walking alongside her quietly. As they continued to walk, he gave one last try, slowing and reaching out his hand slight beside her, palm up and offering as he glanced at her slightly, a soft worry in his cold blue eyes. He hadn't held anyone's hand since Raven's, and he felt unsure, but he wanted to comfort her.

Josephe felt a warmth in his chest as the other took his hand, and he squeezed back gentle, running his thumb over her smaller hand and turning slightly to wrap her in a hug against him, kissing the top of her head gently before resting his head on hers. "It'll be okay, Kait. We'll be okay, We're together, I'm not leaving you no matter what." He told her softly, uncertain of his emotions, but speaking honestly.

Kait froze for a moment before reaching around to hold onto him tightly, burrowing her face in his coat. She felt so small here, but somehow a little bit steadier.

skip

Vincent opened the door to the apartment as quietly as he could, sliding off his shoes silently, hoping just to make it to his room in time to hide the tiny chick in his pocket. He'd almost made it when he saw his mother, glanced at her in fear, and rushed the rest of the way to his bedroom. Maybe she'd be too busy with Stella to come see him. He set his bookbag on his bed and took the fluffy yellow creature out, setting it on the bed and shushing it, looking quickly for a box or something to hide it in.

"Bah!"
Vince glanced up quickly, noticing Roe had woken up from his nap and was sitting in his crib, staring at him with their father's intensely angry face, piercing blue eyes watching the chicken as he cooed in delight, then "BAH BAH! BAHB!" he cried, bouncing excitedly.
"Shhh, Rho, hush up!" Vince whispered in panic, as the chick peeped along, trying to escape his hands and run across the bed.
"Phphphphpphhphppbpbpbt" Roe bubbled curiously.

Kate looked up from where she was playing with her daughter, listening to the baby in the other room. She stood, deciding to get the baby from the crib so the children could play together and she might be able to get some work done.

Vincent panicked when he heard his mother's footsteps, looking around wildly before snatching the chick up and into his coat, sitting down quickly and jumping hard when Kate opened the door to the bedroom. "Hi mom!" He blurted, his voice in a higher pitch than normal.

Roe bounced more in his crib when he saw his mother, giggling from where he was standing against the railing, and reaching out for Vincent. "Bah-bphb-BAHHHHHH" He shrieked, although apparently delighted.

Kait blinked at her oldest son on confusion. Why was he acting so weird? She let it drop, walking to collect the baby. "You wanna play with your brother?" she asked, smiling at the angry looking child.

"Bah!" Roe raised his arms to be picked up.
Vincent tensed as the chick peeped, it's chirps escaping more frantically until it squirmed from his coat and tumbled down his chest as he tried to scoop it up, yelping in shock as it ran across the bed before hopping down onto the floor while Vince chased after it in a panic.

Kait picked up the baby, watching Vince and the creature tensely but with a blank expression. Wordlessly she turned and left the room, closing the door behind her. That could not be what she thought it was. What could have possibly gotten into that boys head that would make him do this? Didn't he know the possible consequences? She fussed about the apartment filled with both fear and rage. She would come back to him once she thought she wouldn't yell.

Vincent caught the chicken just as his mother shut the door. He looked up in shocked silence, waiting for her to return, and growing increasingly worried when he heard her moving about without a word.
He sat for a long time in silence, carefully putting the chicken in a shoe-box with some napkins, and waiting.
When she still didn't come, he crept up to the door and opened it slowly, peeking out.
He slipped through the door and walked up gingerly to Kait, peering out from the hallway. "Moooom? He questioned softly, "Are you angry?"

So Skip?

Josephe made his way home, utterly exhausted and longing to visit Kait. He wouldn't be home long before he was sent out to train new mercycorps and to deal with the unrest in the settlements, but he'd have a few days with Kait before then. He was always anxious about coming home; he loved Kait and the kids, but he couldn't just rest. He felt best when he was moving.
In his pack, he'd brought home some more books for Kait, some candies for Vincent, a toy for Stella, and a nice blanket for Roe. He hadn't seen the baby for months, and wondered worriedly how he'd grown since then. Hesitating outside the door, he eventually knocked and stepped into the small apartment. "Kait?" He called out softly.
